Ammonium Nitrate Rock Blasting

About Gillrange

Steve Gilmartin has explosives and mining in his blood. Starting as a young quarry manager he went on to work with ICI Explosives, then in 1991 he joined forces with Carl Gibbard and together they formed Gillrange Ltd. Gillrange quickly established itself as a significant supplier of ammonium nitrate to quarries and mines throughout the UK. In 2004 a decision was made to separate out the explosives and pyrotechnic sales and a new company, Gillrange AN Ltd, was formed. Gillrange AN Ltd started trading in 2006.

Gillrange AN Ltd is universally known as 'Gillrange'. The core business of supplying ammonium nitrate quickly expanded with the acquisition of drill rigs so that we were able to drill the 'shot holes' required in quarries. We then employed drillers and shot firers so that we were able to offer a range of services that include: sale and supply of explosives, drilling and shot-firing.

  • 1999

Gillrange became the UK distributor for the French Nitrate producer GPN. Currently Gillrange imports over 5,000 tonnes of Ammonium Nitrate each year.

  • 2004

The company expanded its scope of operations and commenced drilling and blasting in open cast quarries in Scotland.

  • 2008

Gillrange acquires Graeme Rees Blasting Services in South Wales. At that stage Rees serviced seven quarries. This has now expanded to eleven sites and the company blasts in excess of two million tonnes of rock each year.

  • 2010

Gillrange commences drilling and blasting operations in Sierra Leone, providing material for a major road and rail refurbishment in conjunction with a UK based civil contractor and an African mining company.
